Thought for October 2024

Worshipping with all our senses.

The “Thought for the Month” is taking a short break, and will resume in November.

Here a few passages for reflection, on using all our senses for worship:

Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

How can you taste the Lord’s goodness? Do you say a Grace with family and friends at mealtimes? What do you think about when you partake in the Communion offerings of bread and wine?

Psalm 146:8 the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous.

What insights do you need to pray for, to better understand the situation you may find yourself in?

1 Corinthians 14:7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes?

Take a few moments to pause and really listen. What do you hear? Can you use these brief sounds to formulate a simple prayer for yourself or the world?

2 Corinthians 2:15 For we are like a sweet-smelling incense offered by Christ to God, which spreads among those who are being saved and those who are being lost.

What is your favourite scent? What memories do different smells conjure up for you? Offer your thanks today for these memories and the people in them.

John 20:24-28 One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (called the Twin), was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the scars of the nails in his hands and put my finger on those scars and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”
A week later the disciples were together again indoors, and Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands; then reach out your hand and put it in my side. Stop your doubting, and believe!”
Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

In a world of science and facts, what does it feel like to have unquestioning faith?

Hymn for October 2024

Our Hymn for October is Through the Love of God Our Saviour

Through the love of God our Saviour,
all will be well.
Free and changeless is his favour,
all, all is well.
Precious is the blood that healed us,
perfect is the grace that sealed us,
strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,
all must be well.

Though we pass through tribulation,
all will be well.
Ours is such a full salvation,
all, all is well.
Happy, still in God confiding,
fruitful, if in Christ abiding,
holy, through the Spirit’s guiding,
all must be well.

We expect a bright tomorrow,
all will be well.
Faith can sing through days of sorrow,
‘All, all is well.’
On our Father’s love relying,
Jesus every need supplying,
in our living, in our dying,
all must be well.
