Life Events

Weddings

You do not have to be a church member to be married in church. However, a church wedding is an act of Christian worship. We will be happy to discuss this with you.

Whatever you decide about church membership, if you come to church regularly beforehand you will feel much more relaxed and at home during your wedding.

There are small fees for a minister, organist church officer, and premises. The appointed minister will advise you of these as part of the service planning.

Funerals

The end of a life can be a devastating event. We are here to support you.

Anyone who is resident in the parish is entitled to request a funeral service led by a minister if they wish, whether at the church or crematorium.

Organising a funeral can be very bewildering and stressful. Your appointed Funeral Director will normally contact a Minister on your behalf, at which point they will be in touch to offer visiting, for spiritual comfort as well as guidance in planning. Our support will continue in prayers and family visits to meet your needs, before and after the funeral, if you require us.

Your Funeral Director will advise you on the various costs involved.

“Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 28:19

Baptisms

Many parents think about Baptism or ‘Christening’ for their children. When you bring your child for baptism you are saying in public that you want your child to be part of the church family.

Baptism is a Sacrament— a sign of something that happens between God and his people. In baptism, water is sprinkled over the head of the person being baptised. This is:

  • a kind of washing, and reminds us of God’s forgiveness
  • an anointing, a sign of new life given to us by God
  • a sign that God is with us as the Holy Spirit, and is giving his blessing.

You may not be sure what you believe, or whether Baptism is right for you or your child. Please don’t be put off! Beliefs about God and Jesus are deep issues that none of us fully understand. One of the tasks of the church is to help us discover something of the mystery of God.

If you are unsure, talk it over with the minister and then decide. There is no charge for Baptisms, and they are usually included in a Sunday service so that the whole church membership has the opportunity to welcome you to God’s family.
